So that’s Cassandra Peterson, AKA Elvira Mistress of the Dark, on the cover of the Tom Waits 1976 album Small Change.

She didn’t start the Elvira bit until 1981.

Before that she left her home town (which now is at the bottom of a lake?) at the age of 17 to become a showgirl in Vegas. It was there that she lost her virginity to Tom Jones and dated Elvis. Elvis suggested she get the hell outta sin city. So she moved to Italy, became fluent in Italian and was the lead singer for a rock band. In Italy she also met Fredrico Fellini and he cast her in the movie Roma with a bit role (you know what that means =)) after that she moved back to the states and became a successful DJ in LA and member of the famous improv troupe the Groundlings along with Phil Hartman, Pee Wee Herman, and Jon Lovitz.

Boss Hogg (Sorrell Brooke) was a dadgum genius. A counter intelligence officer in the Korean War, he was fluent in 5 languages, including Russian & Japanese. He received his bachelors at Columbia and his masters from Yale. A avid carpenter, he built his own home in California. But perhaps the most surprising fact about our little, fat buddy was that he wasn’t even fat. He was 5’6” and only a 175lbs. He wore a fat suit that made him more than 5 feet around for his most famous of roles, J.D. Hogg.

James Hampton was a quiet bespectacled black janitor who lived in Washington DC. For the last 14 years of his life he had a mission which he called The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations’ Millennium General Assembly. Hampton worked on his masterwork in a rented garage, transforming its drab interior into a heavenly vision, as he prepared for the return of Christ to earth. The Throne is his attempt to create a spiritual environment that could only have been made as the result of a passionate and highly personal religious faith.

Hampton’s full creation consists of 180 components—only a portion of which are on view. The total work suggests a chancel complete with altar, a throne, offertory tables, pulpits, mercy seats, and other obscure objects of Hampton’s own invention. His work also includes plaques, tags, and notebooks bearing a secret writing system which has yet to be, and may never be, deciphered.

After he died, the man who owned the garage showed up to collect rent and found it. Hamton’s throne room found a permanent residence in the Smithsonian.

This is a Congolese “Sapeur” - They’re gangs of men that spend tens of thousands of dollars on expensive European designer suits while frequently otherwise living in abject poverty.

They have gang battles where instead of fighting each other, they have “Defi de Sape” - They go to another gang’s turf where their presence demands that the host gang run home and change into their finest suits to prove that they’re classier.
